AVATAR'S

RESTAURANTS

The culinary partner of Avatar’s Indian Bistro, approached me to build a restaurant in a town in the California delta, or central valley.  It’s a sprawling community of retirees and families who have moved from the Bay Area for safe wide open parks for their kids. I had never seen the giant size restaurants that exist in this area. It was a year into the pandemic and small restaurants were closing. How could Avatar’s possibly work…and what could I design that would encourage their success? Did I mention is was a two hours commute? Yet I fell in love with the idea of appealing to the country folk as well as the transplants.

The place was a blank slate with little to work with. The budget after furniture and bathroom remodeling costs, was slight. Almost impossible. Yet with buckets of paint colors and many hours of work, we stenciled the walls, added artifacts and figures of the culture. Avatar’s Indian Bistro tells you a story of the weaving, or handcrafts in villages, or the lineage of the Hindu Gods You taste fresh naan and spicy dishes telling their own story. It hasn’t been an easy ride by any means, just as most restaurants encounter obstacles; we certainly had ours…but the crew is seating a good crowd everyday now and the food is a cut above (actually two cuts above) most big fancy restaurants in the area. It proves that when you pay attention to the details, you smell like a rose in the end.
