Project Overview
Bess Rice Studio is located near the downtown square in Sonoma, California. Originally, it was a small retail space in the heart of wine country with no real identity, although it featured a wonderful display window facing a well-traveled shopping district. The challenge was to create a distinctive boutique that reflected the character of both the artist and her handcrafted jewelry.
Design Story
It was difficult for my client to describe exactly what she wanted, but by studying the etched, handmade ornamental jewelry she created, I gained a clear sense of who she was and the clients she attracted. I knew the space needed generous display areas, but the budget did not allow for custom display cases.
Instead, we searched for vintage retail fixtures and were fortunate to find a beautiful collection of 1950s walnut store display cases. Although they were substantial in size, they fit the space perfectly while leaving room to create additional feature areas. Their timeless character became the focal point of the studio, requiring very little beyond carefully designed accents to enhance their beauty.
I transformed one of the closets into a theatrical display setting and installed illuminated glass display boxes to showcase individual jewelry collections. Ceiling-to-floor drapery, rustic chandeliers suspended from antique rope, and carefully selected furnishings created what I would describe as a rustic Victorian style with the charm of a 1940s old-world retail boutique.
My previous experience in retail display design helped me imagine how pedestrians would respond to the storefront. Vintage suitcases, antique picture frames, and soft sage green tones were arranged to create window displays that encouraged people to stop, become curious, and step inside. Training the sales staff to regularly change the window displays also became an important part of my design responsibility.
What Made This Project Unique
This project remains my romantic favorite. It reminded me that clients do not always see a design through renderings alone, but by staying true to a vision of classic luxury and romance, the finished space can achieve a timeless aesthetic that continues to endure beyond changing trends.
