Ms. Hatos’ Pebble Beach Residence
Project Overview
Some clients describe their design preferences with a list of colors and furnishings. Ms. Hato described hers with one often used word: “champagne darling, champagne!’’
To her, champagne represented far more than a color. It embodied elegance, refinement and the timeless glamour of classic Hollywood. Every decision for her Pebble Beach residence grew from that simple expression of personal style.
Having spent many years surrounded by the sophistication of the television industry through her late husband, she appreciated gracious living but had never fully expressed that aesthetic in her own home. My goal was to create an interior that reflected her personality with warmth, simplicity and quiet luxury.
Design Story
The existing home contained substantial furnishings but lacked the refined character that suited Ms. Hatos. Rather than filling the rooms with additional furniture, I focused on elevating the heavily rich stone and wood architecture.
I softened the rather dark interior, with light tones of silk-upholstered walls, luxurious fabrics, rich wood furnishings and carefully layered textures, including brocades and soft natural materials, creating a glamorous lighter atmosphere. Every furnishing was selected for the elegance of its lines rather than its size or ornamentation, allowing each room to feel spacious while maintaining a sense of comfort.
The living room became the heart of the home, where warm textures echoed the surrounding landscape of Monterey pines and the dramatic Pebble Beach coastline. The result was contemporary in its restraint yet timeless in its elegance, a home that reflected Hollywood sophistication without feeling theatrical.
What Made This Project Unique
This project demonstrated that luxury is not created by excess, but through thoughtful editing and carefully chosen materials. By refining the furnishings, enriching the architectural surfaces and layering textures with restraint, the home achieved a quiet sophistication that perfectly reflected its owner.
The success of the project led Ms. Hatos to commission me to design her second residence in Del Mar, where the same philosophy of understated elegance was expressed in an entirely different setting. Together, the two homes illustrate how a client’s personality, not a predetermined style, can become the foundation for truly personal design.
