Ms. Hatos’ Del Mar Residence
Project Overview
After completing Ms. Hatos’ Pebble Beach residence, I was commissioned to design her second home in Del Mar, California. While both homes reflected her appreciation for understated luxury and timeless elegance, this residence called for a lighter, more relaxed interpretation inspired by its coastal setting.
Located just steps from the Pacific Ocean, I wanted her home to be filled with natural light and expansive views. The challenge was to preserve the sophisticated character she loved in a panoramic space as well as allow her a warm embracing interior in the evening.
Design Story
The design continued Ms. Hatos’ preferred palette of soft creams, champagne tones and luxurious fabrics, while introducing natural linen upholstery, dark rattan accents and warm eucalyptus and bamboo veneers to complement the soft amber accents.
A custom window seat wrapped around the living room, creating more of a supportive place to sit ,for her view of the skyline, as well providing soft elegant over-sized pillows.
Because art and collecting were central to her lifestyle, I designed with the idea she could celebrate her collections without visual clutter. The television screen rose from a concealed hydraulic lift within the bookcase. When hidden, the room became a gallery for her glassware, paintings and treasured cloisonné collection.
Carefully integrated cabinetry reduced the need for additional furniture, allowing the architecture, artwork and surrounding views to remain the focus. Recessed lighting highlighted important collections while creating a warm atmosphere throughout the home.
What Made This Project Unique
Although this was the second home I designed for Ms. Hatos, it was not intended to duplicate her Pebble Beach residence. Instead, it reflected the same personal identity through a different lens, lighter and brighter and coastal.
This project illustrates that once a client’s identity has been thoughtfully understood, future designs can evolve naturally by responding to the architecture, location and lifestyle unique to each home.
