Project Overview
Created as a featured installation within a large design exhibition, the Lily Pond Project transformed a 20 by 40 foot concrete exhibit space into a tranquil bedroom retreat inspired by nature. Designed to demonstrate how imaginative interiors can be created with readily available and affordable materials, the installation invited visitors to experience an unexpected blend of modern design and natural elements.
Design Story
A shallow lily pond with live koi formed the heart of the installation. Above it, a floating bedroom was constructed so that the water flowed beneath the bed, surrounded by ornamental grasses and foliage. A circular carpet suggested the form of a giant lily pad, reinforcing the illusion that the room was resting gently on the surface of the water.
To complement the natural setting, a Parsons table and matching cube were hand painted by an artist using contemporary geometric patterns. A velveteen mattress, splatter painted canvas artwork, softly illuminated shoji screens, and pastel tones created a calm atmosphere while contrasting with the industrial rubber tile flooring below.
What Made This Project Unique
Of all my projects, this remains one of the most adventurous. Bringing a living water feature into the center of a contemporary interior blurred the boundary between architecture and landscape. The room invited visitors to experience nature as part of everyday living, creating an environment that was peaceful, unexpected, and unlike anything I had designed before or since.
